The Wednesday starters will feature the San Francisco staff ace and All Star Madison Bumgarner on the hill as he will oppose the Phillies veteran right hander A.J. Burnett. Bumgarner has produced a record of 11-7 working a total of 133 innings with an ERA of 3.38. The San Francisco starter hit a slump as the All Star Break approached as he allowed four earned runs or greater in four straight starts. His first start following the break resulted in a win and much needed improvement as the left hander threw a good six innings and allowed just a run in a victory at Miami. A.J. Burnett has a record of 6-9 in 2014 and posts an ERA just over four in his 136 2/3rd innings pitched this season. Heading into the All Star Break Burnett had a streak of seven straight quality starts. Unfortunately that good form couldn’t hold up after the break as Burnett was lit up for six earned runs and ten hits on July 18th as the Atlanta Braves got to him and A.J. suffered his ninth loss of the year. The Phillies are an old team and reside in last place in the NL East division. They are 11 games back of Washington in the standings and there are trade rumors swirling as the Phillies may be dealing veterans for prospects as we near the trading deadline. San Francisco is in a tight race with the LA Dodgers in the NL West. Following their weekend series with the Marlins the team was in a flat footed tie for first place. They had built up a 9 ½ game lead over the Dodgers in early June but that was lost in a matter of three weeks.
