They still sit in contention for an AL Wildcard spot and Felix Hernandez has returned to the rotation after being sidelined with an injury.

The Nationals sit five games ahead of Miami in the loss column in the NL East race. Jake Peavy looks to rebound after a poor start at home to Cincinnati where he allowed six earned runs with three homers over five innings.

At 8:30PM Eastern Time on MLB Network the Texas Rangers will host the Kansas City Royals. Texas will start righty A.J. Griffin as he will oppose Royals right hander Edinson Volquez. They met last weekend in a three game series at Kansas City with the Rangers winning two of the three games. KC will open this series with Texas losers of seven of their past ten games. They broke a four game losing streak by holding off an Angels late rally and beating LA 7-5 on Wednesday. A.J. Griffin has struggled going deep into games and has taxed the Rangers bullpen. He has seven no decisions and one loss in his previous eight starts. Griffin held the Royals to one earned run over five innings on July 24th. Volquez held the Rangers to one run and seven hits in six innings pitched on that same date July 24th.

The Royals have struggled this year. They fell to 48-51 after a 13-0 home defeat to the LA Angels on Tuesday for their fourth straight loss and sixth losses in seven games. Texas with their 6-3 home loss to the Oakland Athletics holds just a three game lead in the loss column in the AL West over Houston. The Rangers are a struggling team. Ventura for KC is 6-8 with ERA of 4.99. Ventura is winless in his past five starts with four losses and one no decision. He took the loss at home on July 23rd to Texas by allowing three earned runs with three hits and four walks in a 7-4 defeat.

The Cubs will start right hander Jason Hammel as he will face White Sox righty Jacob Turner.
