Alabama was able to get revenge from the Championship Game defeat last year to Clemson. Crimson Tide beat Clemson 24-6 in the Sugar bowl semifinal playoff behind and outstanding defensive performance. The Alabama run defense was outstanding holding the Tigers to just 64 rushing yards on 33 carries which averaged just 1.9 yards per run. They also won the turnover battle with two intercepted passes. Quarterback Jalen Hurts has been dealing with accuracy issues on the season. He did not accumulate much yards with his completions with 16 of 24 for 120 yards and two touchdowns passes. Hurts had a touchdown throw of 1 yard and 12 yards. The defense put points on the board with Alabama up 17-6 were able to return a Kelly Bryant interception 18 yards in the third quarter to put the game away. Alabama put up 14 points in 13 seconds of that third quarter. Alabama had their lone loss in their final regular season game losing 26-14 against a good Auburn team. Clemson scored their fewest points of the season in their loss to the Crimson Tide.

Georgia fought off an early 31-14 deficit on their way to a 54-46 overtime victory in the Rose Bowl semifinal playoff to Oklahoma Sooners. After allowing 31 first half points the Bulldogs defense held the Sooners scoreless in the third quarter as Georgia put up 14 points to tie the game at 31-31. Each team scored 14 points in the final quarter. The game ended on a Sony Michel 27 yard touchdown run. Georgia offense produced 527 yards but Oklahoma was able to gain 531. A concern for Georgia is the Sooners ran for 242 yards for nearly 5.5 yards a carry on the Bulldogs defense. Georgia’s defense was on the field for 80 plays in The Rose Bowl so there could be some fatigue issues. The Bulldogs had a long flight from the west coast after their Rose Bowl win limiting the time to get ready for Alabama.
