It marked the first time all season that Vegas was unable to bounce back from a loss with a win. A positive note for the Golden Knights is they killed off all four power play chances by the Capitals but went 0 of 2 in their power play tries. Vegas struggled on the power play going 1 of 5 in the loss. Golden Knights dominated the face off circle by a 38-27 margin. Marc Andre Fleury has had a great playoff this season with a goal against average of 1.88 which is his best in his playoff career. The loss broke a five game win streak for the Golden Knights.

Winnipeg tied the game at 1-1 early in the second period but the lead was lost 12 seconds later as the Jets allowed a goal by Golden Knight James Neal. Winnipeg was aggressive offensively in the final period. Jets had 15 shots on net but could not find the equalizer down one goal for much of the third period. Ovechkin has had a good 2018 playoffs with ten goals and nine assists in 15 games. Washington is hoping that center Nicklas Backstrom can return on Thursday. He is 8-3-1 in the playoffs with a goal against average of 2.25. The third year goaltender is competing in the playoffs in 2018 for the first time in his career.

Tampa Bay was up 2-1 in their series playing Game 4 at Boston. They got the key 4-3 overtime victory then closed out the Bruins at home 3-1. Tampa Bay broke a 1-1 tie in the second period with a power play goal by J.T. Miller then iced the game with an Anton Stralman empty netter with a minute and a half left in the game. Goalie Andrei Vasilevskly is 8-2 in the playoffs with a goal against average of 2.20. In the opening round the Lightning knocked out the New Jersey Devils in five games.

The winner of this game will have home ice advantage against the Vegas Golden Knights who eliminated San Jose in the second round. Predators feel confident coming home after avoiding elimination. Winnipeg has two victories on Nashville home ice in this series. In the Jets wins at Nashville they were able to combine for ten goals. In Game 5 the Jets were able to beat the Predators 6-2 to give them two shots at a win to advance into the Western conference finals.

The lone goal of the game for the Penguins was scored by rookie Jake Guentzel. In his 22 playoff games the rookie center has scored 13 goals and assisted on seven assists for 20 points. Guentzel scored 16 goals during the regular season. The Nashville Predators goals were scored by five different Predators players in their Game 3 victory. Two of the Nashville goals were scored on the power play.
