Many had thought the Sharks were dead in this series after falling behind 3-1 following a 3-1 home defeat to Pittsburgh in Game 4. But San Jose has been a very good road team this year. They did drop two one goal decisions in the first two games at Pittsburgh with one in overtime. In Game 5 the Sharks earned the 4-2 victory to extend the series to at least six games. It wasn’t easy as San Jose built up early momentum in the game by scoring the first two goals in a matter of just 2:53 of the first period. But Pittsburgh stormed right back as they scored at 4:44 and 5:06 of the opening period. San Jose recovered and took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission on a Melker Karlsson goal at 14:47. There was no scoring in the second period and the first 18 minutes of the third period. There would be no overtime period as Joe Pavelski scored on a Pittsburgh empty net to draw the Sharks within 3-2 of the Penguins and send the series back to San Jose. It was a huge performance by Sharks goalie Martin Jones who saved 44 of 46 shots. There were many quality chances for Pittsburgh in Game 5 that Jones was able make saves on. Penguin’s goalie Matthew Murry saw his playoff record fall to 14-4 as the rookie saved 18 of the 21 shots he faced. San Jose has a losing record at home with a mark of 18-20 but Jones play the final 55 minutes of the game could give the goaltender a major confidence boost the rest of the way.
