Many had thought the Sharks were dead in this series after falling behind 3-1 following a 3-1 home defeat to Pittsburgh in Game 4. But San Jose has been a very good road team this year. They did drop two one goal decisions in the first two games at Pittsburgh with one in overtime. In Game 5 the Sharks earned the 4-2 victory to extend the series to at least six games. It wasn’t easy as San Jose built up early momentum in the game by scoring the first two goals in a matter of just 2:53 of the first period. But Pittsburgh stormed right back as they scored at 4:44 and 5:06 of the opening period. San Jose recovered and took a 3-2 lead into the first intermission on a Melker Karlsson goal at 14:47. There was no scoring in the second period and the first 18 minutes of the third period. There would be no overtime period as Joe Pavelski scored on a Pittsburgh empty net to draw the Sharks within 3-2 of the Penguins and send the series back to San Jose. It was a huge performance by Sharks goalie Martin Jones who saved 44 of 46 shots. There were many quality chances for Pittsburgh in Game 5 that Jones was able make saves on. Penguin’s goalie Matthew Murry saw his playoff record fall to 14-4 as the rookie saved 18 of the 21 shots he faced. San Jose has a losing record at home with a mark of 18-20 but Jones play the final 55 minutes of the game could give the goaltender a major confidence boost the rest of the way.

Pittsburgh is on the verge of an NHL Stanley Cup as they take the 3-1 series lead with the 3-1 road victory at San Jose in Game 4 as a +112 underdog. For the fourth straight time in this series the total fell under 5 ½ goals. The story of this Finals series has been the goaltending by the Pittsburgh Penguins. In regulation play the Sharks have been held to just two goals or less in each of the four games thus far. Pens rookie goaltender Matthew Murray improved his playoff record to 14-3 as he turned away 23 of 24 Sharks shots. In the past the Penguins have been playoff disappointments with the erratic play by Marc Andre Fleury. The veteran goaltender has now been regulated to backup duty and will probably play for a new team next season. For the fourth straight time in this series the Penguins scored the first goal of the game. They were up 2-0 after two periods but the Sharks got within a goal as Melker Karlsson scored at even strength at 8:07 of the third period. Pittsburgh got the huge insurance goal as Eric Fehr scored at 17:58 to seal it. The Penguins speed has given problems to the Sharks. San Jose goalie Martin Jones had just 17 saves but turned away quality shots by Pittsburgh to keep the Sharks within range. The Penguins have won each game at home in this series winning 3-2 in Game 1 then earning the 2-1 overtime victory in Game 2.

No teams scored in the final eleven plus minutes of the game with San Jose still not holding any lead in this series. In overtime the Sharks got the game winner by Joonas Donkoi at even strength at 12:18 to make this a series. Martin Jones came up big as a faced a flurry of 42 shots on net and turned away 40 as he moves to 13-4 in the playoffs. Pittsburgh is up 2-0 in this series as it heads to San Jose for the next two games. The Sharks once again fell behind as they go down 1-0 in the second period. But for the second straight game the Sharks tied the score and failed to get a game winner. San Jose gave up a late third period goal in Game 1. In Game 2 it was Pittsburgh scoring the game winning goal 2:35 into overtime as Conor Sheary beat Martin Jones. The Penguins again had the most shots as they outshoot the Sharks by a 30-22 margin. The rookies stole the headlines for the Penguins in Game 2. Goalie Matthew Murray is now 13-3 in the playoffs as he stopped 21 of 22 San Jose shots. It was Sheary a rookie for the Penguins with the overtime game winner. Martin Jones dropped his playoff record to 12-4 as he turned away 28 of the 30 Penguins shot on net. It was the fourth time in six overtime periods that Pittsburgh prevailed. Since the calendar turned to 2016 it is the Pittsburgh Penguins who have been playing the best hockey in the league. Like in Game 1 it was Pittsburgh controlling the play. They have a definite skate advantage. The team for years has always had that but this year they have a solid net-minder between the pipes that has not given up soft goals like Marc Andre Fleury has done in the post season in the past. The San Jose Sharks are 7-2 at home in the playoffs. They have a Game 7 victory on home ice in the playoffs as they defeated Nashville in the second round 5-0.

Game 1 saw the Penguins speed lift them up to a 2-0 lead after one period. Then the Sharks responded with two unanswered goals in the second period to tie the game heading into the final period. Pittsburgh got the game winner late in the game at 17:27 as Nick Bonino was able to score at even strength. The Penguins outshot the Sharks by a 41-26 margin in the game. San Jose was 1 of 2 on the man advantage while the Pens go 0 of 3.

San Jose Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer was concerned in the postgame press conference about how his team handled the speed of the Penguins. DeBoer felt that the Sharks did not play their game in defeat. It will be interesting to see if San Jose can radically change the playing style in this series and avoid giving up 41 shots per game. Most teams that are physical facing speed will look to hit at every opportunity. DeBoer commented how San Jose Sharks were spectators and couldn’t dictate their style. That could change should San Jose choose to flex their muscle in Game 2 like many pundits are expecting. Pittsburgh got a good performance from their rookie goaltender Matt Murry who kept the Sharks from scoring in the third period. Sharks goaltender Matt Jones was under constant pressure and was good to keep the Penguins within reach.
