The Chicago Cubs finished the regular season with a better record than the Cleveland Indians but because the American League won the All Star Game home field advantage was granted to the ALCS winner. The Cubs opened up the playoffs beating the San Francisco Giants in four games in their best of five series. They avoided a deciding Game 5 at home in Chicago by overcoming a 5-2 deficit heading into the ninth inning at San Francisco with four runs scored to win 6-5. Next for the Cubs were the LA Dodgers. The team fell behind 2-1 in the series as they were shut out by LA pitching in Game 2 and 3. Chicago got hot at the plate scoring 23 runs in the final three games winning each one and winning the NLCS.

The Cleveland Indians were hit with major injury concerns as they ended the regular season with starters Danny Salazar and Carlos Carrasco sidelined with injuries. Trevor Bauer then injured hit finger in the ALCS and was forced to exit in the first inning of his start. The Indians began their playoff run in the ALDS by sweeping the Boston Red Sox in three games as they held the Red Sox to a total of seven runs combined in those contests. Next up were a good hitting Toronto Blue Jays where the Indians jumped out to a 3-0 series lead as they limited the Blue Jays to three runs combined. Game 4 resulted in a Toronto 5-1 home victory. Cleveland then won the ALCS in Game 5 as they shutout the Blue Jays 3-0.
