Heisman trophy winning quarterback Joe Burrow completed 29 of 39 passes for 493 yards with seven touchdowns. Defensively the Tigers held a very good offensive attack of Oklahoma to just 322 yards. They defended the run well as the Sooners finished with only 97 yards rushing on 28 carries. By far the Tigers faced the more difficult schedule. They even had to travel to Texas to face the Longhorns in an early season non-conference game. Team averaged 554 yards with 397 yards in the passing game with 76.3% completion rate. In conference LSU faced tough competition from Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Texas A&M and Georgia and came away undefeated with the top rated offense in the country with 554 yards per game.

Clemson from the ACC conference did not face nearly as tough competition week in and week out that LSU faced. Their offensive numbers are near the top of the country at number three. They are rated the top defense in the country surrendering only 244 yards per game with 138 in the passing game. Clemson are the defending national champions from a year ago as they blew out Alabama in the championship game. The team faced the previously undefeated Ohio St Buckeyes in the semifinals and earned the 29-23 victory behind 417 yards offensively. They did surrender 516 yards to the Buckeyes offense but forced Ohio St to settle for three fields and one touchdown in the first half as Clemson fell behind 16-0 midway through the second quarter. Clemson rallied as Trevor Lawrence completed a 34 yard touchdown pass in the final two minutes and the defense held on for the win.
