Colorado has dominated Colorado St the past three seasons despite two past down campaigns. Last year it was a 45-13 win, two years ago 17-3 and three seasons ago 44-7. Buffaloes have senior quarterback Steven Montez back with his top target in wide receiver Laviska Shenault. Colorado started 5-0 last year but when Shenault got hurt the Buffaloes struggled during the three games he missed. Mel Tucker enters his first season as head coach of Colorado. He has set the bar high with this team. He wants no waiting room period as head coach and wants to win now with someone else’s players. Tucker was the Georgia Bulldog defensive coordinator the past three seasons and that will be a good thing for the Buffaloes young defense. Tucker spent five games as interim head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars as he has spent a great deal of his coaching career in the NFL. He also has spent time as an assistant with Alabama and Ohio St. Buffaloes will be more up tempo with their offense to get with the times in the PAC 12 and to help recruiting. They are full of playmakers to make this work.

Senior quarterback Steven Montez returns under center. He has seen significant work in all three seasons with the Buffaloes and was a starter in his sophomore and junior campaign. His accuracy improved last season to 64.7% for 2849 yards with 19 touchdowns and 9 picks. Montez had a strong game against the Rams defense last year completing 22 of 25 passes for 338 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Team finished with 596 offensive yards. He also had a 38 yard rushing touchdown. He passed for over 300 yards in five of his games. Sheanault caught 11 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown. Junior KD Dixon had 6 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Colorado strength on the offensive line allowed the Buffaloes rush for 258 yards on 40 carries for 6.5 yards per run attempt in that win. Alex Fontenot in his freshman campaign ran for 14 yards on three carries.

Buffaloes have four starters return on defense. In their win against the Rams, Colorado held CSU to only 103 yards rushing for 2.6 yards per rush. Colorado did lose their final seven games last year but showed the ability the past three seasons to dominate Colorado St. They did a good job in run defense limiting opponents to 3.8 yards per rush.

Colorado St finished at 3-9 last year failed to make a bowl game. Head coach Mike Bobo returns for his fifth season. He turned down his $100,000 raise after a poor 2018 campaign. They return five starters on offense and six to the defense. They saw a huge drop off offensively as the team posted 22.8 points and 411 yards per game. It was eleven points and 81 yards fewer than 2017. The defense digressed for the Rams as the team surrendered 36.9 points and 452 yards per contest. They were pushed around on the ground giving up 5.3 yards per carry worst in seven seasons. Also, could not generate a pass rush. Two of their three wins last year came against two of the worst teams from college football in San Jose St and New Mexico. Rams had a bad home loss to Illinois St. They also beat an awful Arkansas team at home. CSU allowed 43 points or greater in five of their games. Rams did play in a weak Mountain West conference. The defense is young as they are looking to 2020 for a breakout year.

Rams quarterback Collin Hill in his sophomore campaign in 2018 hit on 58.9% of his throws with seven touchdowns and seven picks. Hill will have new starters in the wide receiver and running back position. The signal caller has suffered through two ACL tears, so mobility is a concern. There are three first year starters on the offensive line including center. They are inexperienced at linebacker.
