This will be the rubber game of the three game set with each team winning one game thus far. Heading to the mound for the Detroit Tigers will be left hander Drew Smyly as he will oppose righty Homer Bailey from the Reds. Smyly is 2-2 in 11 starts this year with an ERA of 3.71 and WHIP of 1.25. After a good start to the 2012 year the Tigers southpaw has been very erratic by allowing 19 earned runs over his past five starts working a total of 26 1/3rd innings. Smyly has allowed four earned runs or greater in four of his past five starts. The Reds Homer Bailey is 4-4 in 2012 in eleven starts and possesses and ERA of 4.39 and WHIP of 1.36. Bailey has had two bad starts this season that has elevated his ERA. One of those troubled starts happened last time out on Tuesday as Bailey allowed six earned runs in three innings of work to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Detroit has been a major disappointment this season with a record of 27-32 and in third place in the AL Central six games behind the Chicago White Sox. Detroit’s bullpen has struggled as the unit has an ERA nearly 5 on the road this season. At 32-26 the Cincinnati Reds sit atop the Nationals League Central by one game over Pittsburgh. The Reds bullpen has been good with an ERA of 2.46 on the year.
