Head coach Carl Pelini is in his second year with the Owls as he tries and turn around a program that he inherited after the 2011 season where the club went 1-11. Last year the Owls went 3-9 but were point spread darlings in their road games going 6-1 against the spread. In year one for Pelini he has improved the FAU scoring offense by seven points a game since his arrival to Boca Raton. He has experience with his club as he returns a total of fifteen starters with seven on offense and eight to his defense. East Carolina is also an experienced offense as the club returns eight starters to their offense and eight to their defense. Junior quarterback Shane Carden had an outstanding game in the teams opener as he throws for 447 yards with five touchdowns on 46 of 54 from the field in a 52-38 home win in week one against the Old Dominion Monarchs. The concern for the Pirates over the past three seasons has been the play of their defense. In 2012 the club gave up 32 points a game to their opponents. Even with the defense subpar in 2012 the club earned a bowl berth as they rally winning five of their past six regular season games. They allow 59 to Marshall to finish the regular season then 43 points in their bowl game. Old Dominion who played in the FCS last year posts 38 points on East Carolina. Looks like East Carolina will be involved in a lot of high scoring games.
