It was a good season for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors as they finished the regular season at 9-5. They earned a trip to the Mountain West championship game but fell 31-10 at Boise St. The loss broke a four game win streak. Hawaii has won two straight on their home field with the wins coming to San Diego St and Army. In their loss at Boise St the Rainbow Warriors offense produced only 320 yards with 79 rushing. Cole McDonald hit on 20 of 36 passes for 241 yards and an interception. On the year McDonald completed 64.1% of his throws for 3642 yards with 29 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Hawaii has been a strong offensive team as they averaged 469 yards per game getting 325 from their passing game. They have had issues on defense as the Rainbow Warriors surrendered 426 yards per contest with 201 rushing for 5.6 yards per carry. These teams met last season with BYU posting the 49-23 home victory. The programs have met four times the past eight seasons with BYU winning each time twice at home and twice on the road.

BYU concluded play in the regular season with a mark of 7-5. They went 3-3 on the road. Cougars scheduled difficult early playing PAC 12 teams. They had their five game win streak snapped in a 13-3 defeat at a very good defensive team in San Diego St. BYU posted a couple of notable wins this season defeating both Boise St and USC at home. Cougars put up an average of 439 yards of offense this season with 285 yards in the passing game. In their loss to San Diego St the Cougars defense held the Aztecs offense to only 269 yards. BYU missed two field goals and committed four turnovers in defeat.
