The talk of the preseason in Houston is the quarterback battle. Tom Savage saw work in three games a season ago as the four year veteran is just a little ahead of rookie Deshaun Watson at this point in training camp. Savage started two games last season. He completed 63% of his passes for 461 yards with no touchdowns and no picks. The Texans were 2-0 in those starts beating Jacksonville and Cincinnati at home. Watson was the number one pick of Houston out of Clemson. He is coming off a national championship victory against Alabama leading the Tigers to a late touchdown for the game winner. Competing for a backup role will be veteran Brandon Weeden. The signal caller has 25 starts in the league as he broke in with the Cleveland Browns in the 2012 season. This will also mark the debut of rookie running back D’Onta Foreman who was drafted by the Texans from the Texas Longhorns. He grew up in Texas City, Texas. Lamar Miller in his first season with Houston rushed for 1073 yards in 14 games.

Carolina may give Cam Newton a series or two in the opener. The Panthers veteran quarterback is coming off shoulder surgery in the offseason. Quarterback rotation is meaningful when betting preseason football. Panthers have depth behind Cam Newton with veteran Derek Anderson at the backup position. Veterans Joe Webb and Garrett Gilbert are in the mix to battle Anderson for the backup job. There have been very good reports from the Panthers rookie running back Christian McCaffrey. He has shined in practice as the Panthers defenders have had trouble covering him in pass patterns.
