Most of the nation will get Game 1 of an NL series between playoff contenders as the Cincinnati Reds hit the road to play the St Louis Cardinals. The Reds and Cardinals will get things started from St Louis at 8:15PM Eastern Time and MLB Network will provide the coast to coast broadcast. The pitching matchup will feature Reds right hander Mike Leake as he will oppose Cardinals right hander Justin Masterson. Leake is 9-11 on the year pitching 165 2/3rd innings and has an ERA of 3.59 on the year. After three consecutive quality starts Leake had a poor outing on August 13t at home to Boston as he surrendered five earned runs and eight hits over five innings in defeat. Masterson for St Louis was acquired from the Cleveland Indians around the trading deadline. St Louis has been hit with injuries to their rotation and needed a healthy arm. Cleveland was willing to deal Masterson as he has struggled for much of the season. In his first two starts with the Cardinals Master allowed a total of ten earned runs and eight hits with six walks over eight innings. He responded with a good start next time out on August 13th pitching seven shutout innings in a win at Miami.

Some areas will get the opening game of an AL Central series as the first place Kansas City Royals hit the road to face the Minnesota Twins. The teams begin play from Minnesota at 8:10PM Eastern Time live on MLB Network. Starting for the Royals will be veteran left hander Justin Vargas as he will face Twins right hander Trevor May. Vargas is 9-5 on the year and carries an ERA of 3.27 in his 143 1/3rd innings of work. He is coming off an outstanding effort pitching a complete game shutout at home to Oakland. May in a start and relief effort has given up six earned runs and six hits waling nine hitters over 4 1/3rd innings pitched this season.
