Getting the start for Washington will be Max Scherzer to oppose Brewers right hander Brandon Woodruff. The winner of this game will board a plane and face the LA Dodgers to open the NLDS on Thursday.

Milwaukee enters the postseason with an 89-73 record. They finished with a 40-41 mark on the road. Teams met four times this season with the Brewers winning four of those games. They made up ground in the NL Central race falling two games back of St Louis. Brewers were swept in a three game series at Colorado which sent the team into the one game NL Wildcard. Brandon Woodruff has a record of 11-3 on the season with ERA of 3.62. He missed two months with an oblique injury and had two appearances leading up to the postseason. They were each two innings stints at home to Pittsburgh and San Diego where the right hander allowed no runs and no hits.

Washington got off to a rocky start to their season. They were getting good outings from their starting rotation only to be foiled by ineffective relief pitching. Nationals did rally to win their final eight games and ten of past eleven. Washington bullpen ended the regular season with an ERA of 5.68 and WHIP of 1.48. Max Scherzer missed much of the month of August with a muscle strain. He has not been sharp since his return. He is 2-2 with an ERA of 4.74 upon his return to the Nationals rotation. He has limited base runners with a WHIP of 1.16 in that span with 54 strikeouts in 38 innings. He faced Milwaukee once this season allowing one earned run over six innings with ten strikeouts in early May.
