Southern Miss from Conference USA concluded their regular season at 7-5. They finished their season on a down note as they faced two of the best teams in the conference resulting in losses 28-10 at home to Western Kentucky and a 34-17 defeat at FAU. In another step up game against Conference USA the Golden Eagles fell at Louisiana Tech 45-10. They did pile up wins against the down teams in the conference defeating UTSA, Rice and UTEP. Golden Eagles picked up another win against weak competition by beating FCS Alcorn St to begin the season. Southern Miss is a passing team that generated 288 yards per game. Quarterback Jack Abraham was an accurate quarterback hitting on 67.5% with 18 touchdowns but 15 interceptions. Abraham did not get help from his run game as the Golden Eagles averaged only 122 yards per game for 3.6 per attempt.

Tulane finished their regular season at 6-6 and must be labeled as a disappointment for this team from the AAC conference. They were 5-1 until they faced the heart of their conference schedule. Green Wave lost all of their last five step up games down the stretch ending on a three game losing streak. Their only win in that span came against a non-bowl bound team in Tulsa at home. Their five defeats down the stretch came against bowls team from the AAC. Green Wave concluded the regular season with a 37-20 road defeat at SMU. Tulane was able to move the football for 458 yards running for 251 yards for 5.4 yards per rush this season. Green Wave defense struggled forcing turnovers and getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
