On the hill for the New York Yankees will be Phil Hughes and he will oppose lefty Gio Gonzalez from the Washington Nationals. The Yankees right hander carries an ERA of 4.76 and WHIP of 1.34 on the year. After a poor appearance three starts back against the Angels giving up seven earned runs and 11 hits in 5 1/3rd innings Hughes has put together two quality starts. On June 3rd he allowed just one earned run in nine innings to the Detroit Tigers in a win and in his last start on June 9th the Yankees hurler went 6 1/3rd innings and allowed two earned runs in a home win against the New York Mets. It has been a very good season in 2012 for Nationals left hander Gio Gonzalez. The former Athletic has a 2012 ERA of 2.35 and WHIP of 1.00 in 72 2/3rds innings of work. After allowing four earned runs to the Cubs on opening Day Gio Gonzalez has allowed no more than three earned runs per game thereafter that totals 11 starts.

Both clubs are red hot as they start this weekend series. The Yankees have won six straight and nine of their past ten while the Nationals have won six straight and eight of their past nine games. Washington and the Yankees last met in interleague play back in the 2009 season where the Nationals took two of the three games.
