Houston finished up the 2019 regular season with a mark of 10-6 winning the AFC South division. In the playoffs they beat Buffalo at home. In an AFC Divisional playoff, the Texans blew a huge lead in a 51-31 road defeat at Kansas City. On offense the team averaged 401 yards per game in the playoffs. But on defense surrendering an average of 430 yards. During the regular season, the Texans ranked 29th in pass defense and struggled defending the run allowing 4.8 yards per attempt. They were 31st and second last defending third downs with last in the NFL in red zone defense.

Texans have no first round pick in 2020 and has one pick in the second round. They have pick 40 which is taken in round two. With those poor defensive numbers mock draft experts have Houston selecting Iowa defensive end AJ Epenesa. He ranks as the third best defensive end entering the draft. Scouts like his size, first step and ability to disrupt opponents passing game. Team is also looking to improve their safety position with Ashtyn Davis from Cal a possibility.

Head coach Bill O’Brien is now the general manager and enters his first draft in both roles. He recently told the media that he prefers best available over need sometimes. He made a major trade moving wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins to Arizona. The run game is a need for the Texans with David and Duke Johnson in the rotation. Two running backs are projected to be taken before pick forty. That is no lock as running back D’Andre Swift is projected to be selected at 32 and J.K. Dobbins going 37th. If Swift and Dobbins are available for Houston at 40, then O’Brien may opt for the best or second best running back in the draft.
