Safeties and Cornerbacks are referenced together as defensive backs.  The top defensive back in the draft is corner Jeff Okudah of Ohio St. Overall he ranks as the third best player in the draft. Okudah leaves school after his junior season. He had 28 solo tackles and three picks in the 2019 campaign. Fast corner with good wingspan who can play on either side of the line. Scouts tout Okudah as a corner that can start immediately in the NFL.

Alabama’s Xavier McKinney is rated as the draft’s top safety and overall 13th best player. McKinney played three seasons at Alabama but saw limited time as a freshman. He had 59 solo tackles and three picks last season. The safety does a great job of reading the quarterback and has great speed to close in coverage. Strong tackler from the safety position who hits hard.

Next is Florida corner CJ Henderson who ranks second in the cornerback position with a 15th overall ranking. Henderson saw significant action in his three seasons with the Gators. He had four interceptions in his freshman campaign the most in his college career. The corner is best in man coverage and very good at finding the football when thrown to over the top. He lacks the strength to battle physical receivers who fight to get off the line of scrimmage. Plus Henderson does have a weakness in defending running plays as he needs to get stronger.

The Detroit Lions have the third pick in the draft and must improve on their defensive play under head coach Mike Patricia. Team allowed 284 yards passing per game last season. Patricia was once a defensive coordinator for the Patriots. Okudah is slated in the mock drafts to go third to Detroit.

Mock draft experts have Henderson going to the Dallas Cowboys who have the 17th pick in the draft. They could use a speedy defensive back. Their unit has struggled forcing interceptions the past two seasons.

Miami with the 18th pick in the draft are expected by the experts to select Xavier McKinney. Dolphins have three first round picks in the draft and expected to take a quarterback early. With their middle pick McKinney would be a great addition at safety as the Dolphins spent money in free agency at the cornerback position.
