The current odds at Oddsmaker, where the bonuses are the best in the business have the Kansas City Chiefs favored by -157 odds to win the AFC West. Kansas City were AFC West champs last year finishing with a 12-4 regular season record. KC had the look of a Super Bowl entrant but had to suspend running back Kareem Hunt and the team lost two of three to close the regular season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led an offense that averaged 35 points and 418 yards per game throwing for 303 yards. They added a weapon in the passing game by drafting wide receiver Mecole Hardman out of Georgia. Defense did surrender 26 points and 404 yards per game. Team picked up in free agency safety Tyrann Mathieu and drafted on defense with three of their four picks.

Second in the wagering are the LA Chargers at +220 odds. LA finished at 12-4 and won a road playoff game at Baltimore. They were blown out in the Divisional Round to New England 41-28 on the road. Chargers balanced good on offense and defense. Under quarterback Phillip Rivers, the team averaged 253 yards per game passing. They did break a playoff drought of four seasons with their entry in 2018. Chargers drafted defensive lineman Jerry Tillery out of Notre Dame with their first pick in the draft and drafted three defensive players with their first four picks. Tyrod Taylor was acquired to backup Phillip Rivers which is a huge upgrade.

Denver Broncos sit at +800 in the betting. Broncos missed the playoffs three straight seasons. Vic Fangio takes over as head coach. Fangio a defensive minded coach. Team was 6-10 last year struggling on offense averaging only 21 points and 231 yards passing per game. Team picked up Joe Flacco in a trade. Broncos selected Missouri four year starter Drew Lock as the backup and possible quarterback of their future. Phillip Lindsey contributed in a backfield for Denver that averaged 4.9 yards per carry. With that running game Joe Flacco could have a good season for the Broncos. In his productive years, Flacco was aided by a strong running game for the Ravens.

The longshots to win the AFC West are the Oakland Raiders who return +1400 odds. Oakland missed the playoffs for a second straight season at 4-12 in Jon Gruden’s first year in his second tenure with the club. Overall Gruden is 44-40 as a head coach in his career as he has been fired by the Buccaneers and Raiders. Defense got worse in Gruden’s return to coaching as the Raiders allowed 29 points and 381 yards per game. Five of their first six picks in the draft came on defense. They did take running back Josh Jacobs with their second pick to help a run game that netted only 4.2 yards a carry in 2018. Team picked up Antonio Brown in free agency from the Steelers to help Derek Carr in the passing game.
