Denver has failed to make the playoffs for three straight seasons. They turn to defensive guru Vic Fangio as their new head coach. The 60 year old last served as the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator for the previous four seasons. His first job in the NFL was in 1984 as a linebacker coach with the New Orleans Saints where he served nine seasons. He has been a defensive coordinator for five teams in his career in the NFL. He set a goal in the Hall of Fame Game to get as many young players on tape as possible in game situations. Fangio will be calling plays on defense.

The Denver Broncos quarterback rotation will be Kevin Hogan who has starting experience in the NFL. Behind Hogan in the rotation are rookies Drew Lock and Brett Rypien.

Atlanta Falcons have rebuilt their offensive line. Their first pick Chris Lindstrom out of Boston College has worked with the first team taking reps and has been impressive. Kaleb McGary out of Washington their second pick in the draft has played well and working his way into the first team getting some reps. They also added depth in free agency in guards James Carpenter and Jamon Brown.

The running back position will be competitive. Devonta Freeman due to injuries played in only two games in 2018. They lost depth in that position with Tevin Coleman leaving, going to San Francisco in free agency. Freeman wont play on Thursday. The backs in action include Ito Smith, Qadree Ollison, Kejon Barner, Brian Hill and Tony Brooks-James. A rookie out of Oregon, Brooks-James was undrafted had a good rookie camp and candidate to earn a paycheck as a practice squad player who could get the second year bump in 2020. Qadree Ollison drafted out of Pittsburgh is a back with physical size capable of breaking tackles and with speed for big plays. Many are calling this a steal in the fifth round of the draft. He started in his freshman campaign in college. In 2018 he rushed for 1213 yards with 11 touchdowns and missed no games. That equated to 6.3 yards per carry and had no fumbles in his career in college. He does have versatility catching balls out of the backfield. He could spend his time as a third down back in his rookie campaign.
