The teams met twice in the regular season with each team winning at home. In Boston the Bruins earned the 5-2 victory. In St Louis it was the Blues winning 2-1 in a shootout.

St Louis entered the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in the NHL. The team was sitting outside the playoffs near the bottom of the Western conference in December. They advanced into the Stanley Cup Finals by defeating the San Jose Sharks in six games in the Western conference finals. Blues fell behind 2-1 in the series in overtime on a controversial goal as San Jose scored on an assist by a hand pass that was missed by the referees. St Louis then won the final three games as they outscored the Sharks 12-2. Blue goaltender Jordan Binnington has a save percentage of .927, has a record of 36-10-3 this season and a goal against average of 2.07. He has held four of his past five opponents to score only two goals or fewer.

Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask has performed well by holding nine of his past ten opponents to two regulation goals or fewer. Boston swept the Carolina Hurricanes in four games in the Eastern conference finals as Rask gave up a total of five goals total in the series. In the Eastern conference semifinals, the Bruins were down 2-1 to Columbus. They then won the next three games by holding the Blue Jackets to only four goals total. Boston enters play on a seven game playoff win streak allowing a total of nine goals.
