Virginia Tech posted the only loss of the year on the Ohio St Buckeyes. It took place early in the season at Ohio St with the Hokies winning by the score of 35-21 as a ten point underdog. In that win the Hokies forced mistakes from the Buckeyes as J.T. Barrett threw for three interceptions. The Ohio St star running back Elliot had just 32 rushing yards on the ground with only eight carries. Barrett had the majority of the rushing attempts as he was having difficulty with the Virginia Tech pass rush. In the defeat Barrett had 70 rushing yards on 24 carries. The Buckeyes had trouble sustaining drives as they converted just 4 of 16 on third downs. Hokies starting quarterback Michael Brewer had two touchdown passes in the game but looked shaky with two interceptions. He finished the night going 23 of 36 passing.

The Hokies were an underperforming team in 2014 with a record of 6-6 after their final regular season game. They needed a victory against Virginia in Game 12 to earn a bowl bid. The offense sputtered for Virginia Tech as Michael Brewer threw for 18 touchdowns and 15 picks.

Ohio St is coming off a national championship win against Oregon 42-20. The team returns 14 starters from a 2014 team that scored nearly 45 points a game and allowed 22 to their opponents. Much of the offense came from their talented running back Ezekiel Elliot who rushed for 1878 yards with 7 yards per carry average. Elliot finished with 18 touchdowns. Head coach Urban Meyer intends to name his starting quarterback at game time.
