Many pundits thought the Philadelphia Eagles chances for a Super Bowl run came crashing down as the team lost starting quarterback Carson Wentz for the season with a knee injury at the LA Rams on December 10th. Backup Nick Foles took over as the starter and the team won two of their final three regular season games. They faced the Atlanta Falcons in the Divisional Round and their defense preserved a 15-10 home victory as they forced the Falcons to turn the ball over on downs deep in Eagles territory in the closing seconds. In the NFC Championship Game, the Philadelphia defense had a pick play early to change the momentum of the game. Down 7-0 in the first quarter Patrick Robinson picked up a pass and ran it back 50 yards for a touchdown. Since that big play the Eagles outscored the Vikings 31-0. Nick Foles got great protection and hit on 26 of 33 passes for 352 yards and three touchdowns.

New England returns to the Super Bowl by defeating Tennessee and Jacksonville in the playoffs. In the divisional round the Patriots routed the Titans 35-14 covering as a -13 ½ point favorite. After falling behind 7-0 after one quarter the Patriots scored 35 unanswered points in the victory. Patriots got a game out of Jacksonville as a late Tom Brady four yard touchdown pass to Danny Amendola with under three minutes put the Patriots ahead for good 24-20. Amendola had two touchdown catches in the AFC championship. Brady threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns. In the win against the Titans Brady had three touchdown passes and passed for 337 yards.
