The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the major disappointments this NBA season. Because of the Lakers fall they have not got the attention from many in the major media circles. They sit with an 18-24 record at one game over the halfway point of this season. Heading in Wednesday’s action they occupy the 11th seed in the Western Conference a ½ game ahead of the Lakers. They trail the Houston Rockets by 3 ½ games for the eighth spot in the playoffs with 40 games remaining. Dallas had a bit of bad luck as Dirk Nowitzki underwent knee surgery during the offseason and his rehab went pretty long into the season. Nowitzki has missed 27 of the Mavericks 42 games this season. When Dirk returned to the lineup his numbers were not very impressive. After 15 games this year Nowitzki is making just 40% of his shots and averaging 14 points and 5 ½ rebounds a game. When you watch his movements on the court it is obvious Nowitzki is not yet 100% and is still working back into shape. Head coach Rick Carlisle has called his players out for their lack of defense and threatened to take away minutes. When you look up and down the Dallas stats you see Vince Carter playing less than 25 minutes a game. Carter is shooting just 41% from the floor this season and don’t be surprised if he is moved by the trading deadline. The Mavericks are 28th and third to last in the NBA in points allowed as they give up nearly 103 points per game. Heading into Wednesday’s action the Spurs were sitting as the second seed in the Western Conference just one game behind Oklahoma City. As they hosted New Orleans on January 23rd the Spurs were riding a five game win streak. San Antonio makes good use of their roster as 13 of their 14 players average double digit minutes per game. The Spurs players are fresh as no one starter averages more than 33 minutes per game.
