Dykes has six starters returning to his offense with eight to the defense. This was a Mustangs offense in 2017 that produced 37.8 points with 478 yards per game. SMU dropped to 0-1 as they lost at North Texas 46-23 failing to cover as a +3 ½ point betting underdog. It was yet another Sonny Dykes coached game where his defense was lit up. Mean Green gained 529 yards with 461 passing. North Texas built a 36-0 lead four minutes into the fourth quarter as the 23 points scored by the Mustangs came when the game was already decided.

TCU finished at 11-3 after their 39-38 bowl victory to Stanford. Head coach Gary Patterson lost a lot of starters with five returning on offense and six to the defense. Defense showed improvement last season giving up 19 points with 331 yards per game. Quarterback Shawn Robinson is a first year starter in his sophomore season with the program. Horned Frogs in 2017 posted 33.6 points with 419 yards per game. TCU rolled passed Southern at home in their opener 55-7 as a -49 ½ point favorite. Robinson in his debut hit 17 of 24 for 182 yards and three touchdowns. Horned Frogs held the Jaguars to 185 offensive yards.
