“Three in the Busch”

First place in the NL Central will be up for grabs this weekend at Busch Stadium when the (51-34) Chicago Cubs lock horns with the (49-37) St. Louis Cardinals for a three game set. The Cubs currently hold a 2.5-game lead over the Redbirds within the division with Milwaukee nipping at their heels just 4.5-games out. Chicago will close out its 10-game road trip here in hopes of picking up just its third prolonged road series win of the season, while the Cardinals will finish out their seven-game homestand before closing out the first half of the season on the road at Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

The Cubs have been a dominant force in the comfy confines of Wrigley Field this season evidenced by their stellar 33-10 record that’s brought its betting backers in close to $1800.00 on the season. That said, they’ve been below average on the road winning just 18 of their 42 overall road games.

St. Louis continues to play solid ball even though a bulk of their squad is on the DL. Their pitching staff has been hit hard with injuries, but the Redbirds have persevered and still own one of the better pitching staffs in the league currently ranked 12th overall with a team ERA of 4.10. They’ve earned a modest return for the betting public at home (+$253.00) by posting a 25-18 home mark to date.

This series marks the second time Chicago and Lou Piniella will have paid Tony LaRussa and the Cardinals a visit after they dropped two of three to the Redbirds back at the beginning of May. Chicago dominated their division rivals last season winning 11 of their 16 overall match-ups, including seven of the nine played in this venue.
