For Utah standards a 7-5 season record in unacceptable. Their play on the field at times has been downright ugly.

Bad home losses to Arizona St and Washington in PAC 12 play early dampened the hopes of those in Salt Lake City for a Rose Bowl appearance.

But with USC on probation and Arizona St choking down the stretch the Utes had a spot in the PAC 12 championship in their hands if they could just defeat hapless Colorado at home the day after Thanksgiving.

You know the script the Utes not only disgraced themselves but also the PAC 12 conference as they dropped a 17-14 home decision to atrocious Colorado as a -22 ½ point favorite sending a bad UCLA team to a national television appearance in the PAC 12 championship game.

The Utah fans showed their disgust for the season by not buying tickets for this game as a reported 1500 tickets have been bought up by the Ute fans for their Sun Bowl appearance.

Utah quarterback Jon Hays completed just 57% of his passes with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions.

That might get it done in the Mountain West conference but it downright sucks in the PAC 12 conference in a league that sends signal callers to the NFL.

Their major offense threat is running back John White IV who rushed for 1405 yards on 290 carries with 14 touchdowns and 4.8 yards per rush.

You will see a lot of White carrying the football in the Sun Bowl.

Georgia Tech was a team that beat lower echelon teams but lost when stepping up in class to the likes of Georgia, Virginia Tech, Miami and Virginia.

They continue to run the triple option for head coach Paul Johnson who brought it over from Navy.

They run for 316 yards per game with 5.8 yards per rush average.

Quarterback Tevin Washington hit on just 46.7% of his throws with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

On the ground running back David Sims had a 5.2 yards per rush average on 135 carries.

Orwin Smith on 60 runs had 10.3 yards per carry average and Roddy Jones chipped in with 8.4 yards per rush on 52 runs from scrimmage.

It won’t be easy for Georgia Tech to pile up yardage because the Utes strength is in run defense as they allow teams just 3 yards a carry on the year.

Also Utah used to see this offense every year in their Mountain West seasons when they faced the Air Force.

Utah is trending in bowl games covering seven of their past nine but the better play is on the under in the Sun Bowl.
